ANATOMY -THE ELBOW

The Elbow is one of the major functional joints in the human body. It is second in dislocations only to the shoulder joint. It is described as a hinge joint. This joint is designed to move in flexion (the arm is bent) and extension (the arm is straight). The elbow is kept in this plane by ligaments, tendons, muscles, and placement of bones which all act as stabilizers to this joint.

. The rest of the joint is composed of the ligament complexes. These ligaments provide up to 50% of the elbow joint stability. These ligaments can be divided into two complexes:

  1. Lateral ligament complex (located on the outer side of the elbow)

    • Lateral collateral ligament.
    • Radial collateral ligament
    • Annular ligament
There are three main bones that make up the elbow. These three are the humerus (arm bone), the radius, and the ulna (these two bones make up the forearm)

2.Medial collateral ligament complex ( located on the inner side of the elbow) = the UCL(ulnar collateral ligament

  • Anterior band (most important in terms of injury and repair)
  • Posterior band
  • Transverse ligament
