PERFORMANCE

The presence of ideal physical characteristics for performance is related to the learner’s state of physical training or level of physical condition. These qualities cannot be taken for granted in gross motor activities. Training is specific to the unique demands placed on the person by the particular activity.

An intelligent and sensitive teacher would analyze carefully the physical demands placed on learners attempting to acquire skill in an activity. Deficiencies in learners in pertinent physical characteristics should be noted and remedial programs proposed to develop any insufficient strength, endurance, or flexibility underlying potential achievement in a particular task. Remember that a person can learn a task but may not have the means to practice adequately and perform what is known. Task analysis, and personality analysis will be helpful to facilitate the goals of any instructional program in which gross motor skills are to be learned.

In any conditioning program there are four areas of conditioning that are vital to the athlete. They are, as mentioned; strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular, or cardiorespiratory endurance. And, as might be expected, there is a relationship among strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness.
