Annual Preseason Strength and Conditioning Workouts for Baseball Pitchers

WHAT:

The American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) is an organization dedicated to the understanding and prevention of sports related injuries. Renowned orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. James Andrews, and his staff have gone to great lengths to make ASMI the utmost authority on every aspect of baseball pitching. Because of the increasing number of throwing injuries to pitchers, we have developed a strength and conditioning program specifically for pitchers.  This program will be strictly for strengthening and conditioning the pitcher's body.  There will be NO technique or mechanical instruction.  The program has been designed according to the general conditioning guidelines presented by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.  We have tailored our program to be specifically for baseball pitchers according to the forces and torques placed on the shoulder and elbow.  Our plan is to increase core strength, as well as the strength, stability, and endurance of the shoulder and elbow joints.  The goal of the eight-week program is to strengthen the muscles that are firing during the pitch, as well as the muscles that surround the ligaments and attach to the tendons.  Each session will be supervised and administered by a nationally certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) with a background in baseball pitching and biomechanics.  Please allow us the opportunity to speak with you regarding our program and the benefit it will bring to the longevity of your pitching career.

WHY:

The number of pitching related injuries to junior high and high schoolers is growing at an alarming rate.  As one of the premier sports medicine institutions in the country, we believe that it is our responsibility to offer our expertise to the public in matters such as this.  By teaching young pitchers how to condition and strengthen their bodies, we hope to assist in the longevity of their pitching careers.

WHO:

The strength and conditioning program will be tailored to junior high and high school baseball pitchers ages 13-18.  Baseball pitcher conditioning is different from other sports because the athlete is not trying to develop as much muscle mass as possible.  The baseball pitcher needs to have lean body mass, muscular endurance, and great flexibility.  This program is specifically designed to incorporate each of these aspects into the overall performance of the athlete.

WHEN:

The Pre-Season Strength and Conditioning Program will begin October 25th and run for 8 weeks.  The pitcher will be asked to attend two to four sessions per week.  Training sessions will be available on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for the entire 8 weeks.  Weekday times will be from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  Weekend times will be TBA.  Each session will last one hour with up to six participants per session.  During this program, the pitcher will implement muscular strength and endurance exercises as well as pitching specific plyometrics to prepare for the upcoming season.

COST:

The cost per pitcher each session (1 hour) is $20.  Group or team discounts are available.
