The basic educational method of the Fellowship program involves Fellows and faculty working side-by-side in all aspects of patient care. The Fellows spend 70 to 80 per cent of their time in direct patient care in the clinic, operating rooms, rehabilitation, and follow-up. Additionally, Fellows rotate periodically through the service of several faculty members to gain maximum exposure to different philosophies and procedures. Fellows conduct research under the supervision of the Director of Research in a well equipped biomechanics laboratory. Fellows are assigned one college and high school each, where they care for athletic teams on a regular basis. They also participate in pre-participation physicals for high school, college and professional athletes. As first surgical assistants, the Fellows are integral participants in the pre-operative counseling and instruction of the injured athlete and in provision of surgical care. They attend weekly continuing education meetings, monthly journal club meetings, distinguished lectures, and professional meetings with opportunities to develop and make audiovisually augmented presentations. Evaluation takes place daily as Fellows and faculty work side-by side in all aspects of patient care with opportunity for ongoing informal assessment concerning Fellows knowledge, skills, attitudes, and professional decorum.
